Music in March!

Updated: 4 hours ago

Here at TCT music therapy we offer children a space to play, explore and interact through music and sound using a mix percussion instruments and some simple music tech gadgets. Music is something that everybody responds to and can react to. What ever a child is able to do through their movement, voice or even just by looking - it can lead to music making. Music therapy draws out children’s strengths and abilities and can support their skills development in many areas such as attention, social skills and self and creative expression.

In music therapy sessions children are involved in ‘in the moment’ music making and through this musical play they can be supported to develop and practice their communication skills and interaction. For example, working on eye contact, turn taking or vocal sound production. Or the focus could be on improving their physical health and abilities. For example, co-ordination, muscular skills, fine motor skills.

Working with a child in musical play can therefore have a real impact when it is used alongside other therapies at TCT - such as Physiotherapy and Speech and Language Therapy. It can also be a meaningful aid and support emotionally. In the words of one child after his music therapy session "I felt a bit stressed but now I'm much happier!".

I am constantly surprised and inspired by the ways in which our children use music to play and explore. They demonstrate what they can do when given a language - a musical language - that makes ‘sense’ to them!  That’s what I love so much about working with music at TCT - it reminds me of what music is really about. Music is for playing, it’s about making connections and sharing - it’s about being part of something.

Our innate responsiveness to music, as human beings, is something we all share. And that is something to celebrate!

In the words of the composer Edward Elgar:

“My idea is that there is music in the air, music is all around us; the world is full of it and you simply take as much as you require”.
